Patron of Abstract Expressionism: Peggy Guggenheim and Jackson Pollock
Dr. Gražina Subelytė, Associate Curator, Peggy Guggenheim Collection
In her gallery Art of This Century, founded in New York in 1942, Peggy Guggenheim dedicated four exhibitions to Jackson Pollock—more than any other artist that she represented. Over time she acquired a significant number of his works. Guggenheim was confident in her “discovery” of Pollock. In the announcement of his first solo show in November 1943, she described it as “an event in the contemporary history of American art.”
Art historian Gražina Subelytė examines Peggy Guggenheim as a patron of American painting and the role that her gallery played in establishing Abstract Expressionism. The lecture focuses on Guggenheim’s early support of Pollock, who under her patronage developed his characteristic “drip” technique and whose work she made known in the United States and beyond.
