Sun: The source of light in the film
Sun, 4. June
On three Sundays, the Filmmuseum Potsdam is showing programs accompanying the exhibition Sun. The Source of Light in Art film programs that focus on the celestial body in different ways. As a symbol, the sun embodies cosmic power and human knowledge. But it also invites reflection on the medium itself, for in film light and its inevitable companion, shadow, are indispensable as staging, artistic, and dramaturgical devices.
Upon presentation of a ticket to the Museum Barberini, the Filmmuseum Potsdam grants reduced admission to the above-mentioned films. Upon presentation of a ticket to the film screenings, the Museum Barberini grants reduced admission to the exhibition Sun. The source of light in art.

Short film program: Here Comes the Sun
1900-2020, approx. 80' in total.
Between the earliest documentary footage and today's NASA visualizations of solar activity; between the sun as an iconographic component and an artistically abstract exploration of it, the program brings together short films from different times, countries and genres in an attempt to trace the sun in film. Among the films shown is a short film project by avant-garde icon John Cage, which was lost until recently, in which he stages Richard Lippold's well-known sun sculpture on film. But film pioneer Georges Méliès and animation artist Rasa Strautmane will also be represented.

Icarus
R: Heiner Carow, D: Peter Welz, Karin Gregorek, Hermann Beyer, DDR 1975, 86'
Eight-year-old Mathias dreams of becoming a pilot and of his divorced parents getting back together. He is in great anticipation because his father has told him the story of Icarus and promised to take him on a sightseeing flight for his birthday. Mathias is deeply affected when the father does not come, runs away from home and even gets into trouble with the police. On the roof of a house, he finally comes to an understanding: Icarus didn't crash because he didn't listen to his father, but because he had forgotten him. Director Heiner Carow (The Legend of Paul and Paula) sets his version of the Icarus myth in Prenzlauer Berg. Carow himself described the touching coming-of-age story as his most successful film.

The Stranger
R: Luchino Visconti, D: Marcello Mastroianni, Anna Karina, Bernard Blier, I/F/Algeria 1967, Italian/German subtitles, 104'
In French-occupied Algeria in 1935, Arthur Meursault leads an unremarkable, apathetic life. By chance, he becomes involved in the criminal affairs of a neighbor. During a pursuit on the beach, Meursault shoots a man. He is arrested and his case is brought to court. The defendant cites the glaring light of the sun, which blinds him, as the reason for the accidental shooting. But the court condemns him because of his coldness of heart. Visconti's film adaptation of Albert Camus' existentialist classic novel is considered particularly faithful to the work.
