From medieval murals to bright pink toys: To conclude the exhibition, journalist, architecture and museum historian Nikolaus Bernau (radio3, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, FAZ, Tagesspiegel, ZEIT) will give a lecture taking a pointed look at the presence, stretching from the Middle Ages to the present day, of a creature that supposedly does not exist—and yet is omnipresent.
The lecture traces the often astonishing paths of the unicorn as a dazzling projection screen for hopes, identities, and social debates. The unicorn has been part of our everyday life for centuries. It appears in elitist court art and heartfelt religion, is displayed in museums, used as a political tool, as a queer symbol, and in children's imaginations – always changeable, contradictory, and ambiguous.
