Beyond Painting: Max Liebermann between Strategy and Cultural Politics
Wed, Mar 25, 7 p.m.
Liebermann was not only a highly successful artist, he also occupied a central position in the art and culture scene over the years as president of the Berlin Secession and later as president of the Prussian Academy of Arts. But how did he become what he was? In which networks did he move? What difficulties did he face and how did he deal with them? Liebermann's path within a complex structure of power structures, times of political upheaval and the sometimes incompatible ideals of the art world is an exciting part of the history of modern art behind and beyond his painting.
