Expert Talks: Liebermann
Max Liebermann’s Impressionist style of painting was an important impetus for the first avant-garde movement in Germany. As a collector and intermediary of French Impressionists and as president of the Berlin Secession, he lent internationality to the art world of the nationalistic German Empire. France played a crucial role in Impressionism in Germany from the beginning. Inspired by French art, Liebermann and numerous other painters created pulsating cityscapes, views of modern leisure activities, animated portraits of children, and dramatic theater scenes.
