Painting like Signac
Vibrant colours, shimmering light and optical effects are the focus of this workshop. Through the paintings of Paul Signac and the Neo-Impressionists, you will explore how individual dots of colour come together to create vivid images. You will then experiment with colours and contrasts using this unique painting technique. Dot by dot, you will translate your impressions into your own paintings.
Thu, July 30, 10 am - 1 pm, Atelier + Courtyard
Painting like Signac. Outdoor workshop
Step out of the studio – paint in the museum courtyard! At the Barberini Museum, you’ll learn about Paul Signac and his art. Afterwards, you’ll paint pictures outdoors in the museum courtyard using lots of coloured dots, inspired by his unique technique. Using bright contrasting colours and small dots, you’ll capture light, water and atmosphere, and develop your own perspective on nature and art.
Please note: As part of the workshop takes place outdoors, we recommend bringing a hat and a water bottle. In case of rain, we’ll work in the Atelier.
Mon, August 3, 10 am - 1 pm, Atelier
Create your own Neo-Impressionist Perler Bead Patterns
In the paintings of the Neo-Impressionists, countless tiny dots and short strokes come together to form vibrant compositions – almost like a mosaic. In the exhibition, you’ll view the works up close and from a distance: how does the effect change? And what gives the colours their special luminosity? Afterwards, you’ll create your own mosaic pictures using bead stringing and experiment with complementary contrasts and optical effects.
Thu, August 13, 10 am - 1 pm, Atelier
Painting like Signac. Portrait workshop
Together, we’ll embark on a journey of discovery through the exhibition and look for the best artistic techniques for portrait painting. Inspired by the luminous portraits of the Neo-Impressionists, which consist of countless individual dots of colour, you will explore this special technique for yourselves in the Atelier: dot by dot, your own portraits will take shape.
Thu, August 20, 10 am - 1 pm, Studio
Art meets physics
In collaboration with the NANO Science Centre, Potsdam
How are colours formed in the eye? And why did Paul Signac paint his pictures using lots of tiny dots? In this workshop, art and science come together. Together with experts from NANO, you’ll explore in a fun way how the light spectrum and the perception of colour relate to art. In the exhibition, you’ll get to know Paul Signac’s original paintings and learn how his painting technique relates to physics and optics. Through experiments, observations and your own trials, you’ll approach Signac’s technique step by step – and apply your findings to a painting of your own.
Teens, 12–17 years:
Fri, July 10, 10 am - 1 pm, Studio
Signac – NOW. Dance workshop
In collaboration with fabrik Potsdam.
How can we experience Paul Signac’s paintings today? During a short guided tour of the exhibition, you’ll get to know Paul Signac and his unique style of painting. Then it’s off to the studio: together with choreographer, visual artist and art educator Lydia Müller, you’ll explore Signac’s world through dance, movement, sketches, words and thoughts. What does a painting feel like? Can colour be set in motion? Guided by your own perceptions, you’ll translate Signac’s paintings and ideas into the here and now. For anyone who enjoys moving, dancing and has a passion for art.
Wed, July 15, 10 am - 1 pm, Atelier + Courtyard
(Alternatively on July 17 in case of rain)
Signac meets Graffiti
How can Pointillism be reinterpreted through the energy of urban art? In this workshop, you will experiment with graffiti techniques and develop your own visual compositions combining colour, dots, surfaces and rhythm. Following a brief introduction to the exhibition, we will head to the studio and the museum courtyard, where artist Mark Straeck will guide you through working with spray cans. Mark Straeck comes from the graffiti scene and has been exploring graffiti in terms of both aesthetics and content for many years.
Please note: As part of the workshop takes place outdoors, we recommend bringing a hat and a water bottle. In the event of rain, the session will be postponed to 17 July at 10 am.
Wed, July 22, 10 am - 1 pm, Studio
A Change of Perspective with AI
What language does AI need? Together, you’ll explore French Impressionist paintings in the exhibition. Drawing on your impressions and the visual language of the paintings, you will use AI to create interesting new works step by step. This prompt workshop was developed in collaboration between the Maker Universe at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam and the Barberini Museum.

Design with vinyl foil: Textile upcycling
Bring along an old T-shirt, a cloth bag or another piece of fabric and give it a new lease of life: in this workshop, you’ll create abstract, colourful designs using vinyl foil (heat transfer vinyl). Inspired by the exhibition ‘Symphony of Colours: Paul Signac and Neo-Impressionism’, you will create your own shapes, colour fields and compositions using vinyl film, which will then be transferred onto your textile as a collage. This transforms an old favourite into a unique, one-of-a-kind piece – for yourself or as a special gift.
